The Lightning have gotten the ball rolling with the trades with trade just before puck drop tonight. Even though this morning it was all Kubina talk, today Dominic Moore was traded to the San Jose Sharks with a 7th round pick in 2012 for a 2nd round pick in the 2012 draft. San Jose's pick has been previously acquired from Minnesota.

The announcement came just a little bit before the two teams faced off against each other tonight. But no weirdness on the ice as Moore didn't play for the Sharks tonight.

I liked Moore, thought he worked hard and was pretty good in his role on the team. But as a UFA and the Lightning looking more and more like they are looking to rebuild with picks, this was expected.

This gives the Lightning three picks in the 2nd round of the 2012 entry draft and confirms that we are selling baby.

Here's Yzerman giving you the side eye on the trade:

Record: Lightning (24-25-6) Senators (28-22-8)
Previous games this season: January 5: Senators win 4-1, December 5: Senators win 4-2,
Game time: 7:00pm EDT on SUN (HD), RDS

Ottawa has been hanging on to 7th place in the Eastern Conference having only 1 win in the last 9 games. They are currently just three points out of dropping out of the playoff race right now. Since we are still technically in the playoff race (8 points is doable right? right???), well this game is a huge deal for the team.

After dropping Sunday night's game to the Pens, the Lightning need a bounce back game. Tonight's game at home is the first to start off a four game homestand and is the perfect opportunity to pick up on the winning. Facing a team that has dropped 8 of 9 is hard though because it's possible you underestimate the Senators and instead of a sucky team, have a Ottawa team putting in a strong effort. Also we can't forget that of the last two meetings, the Senators took both of them.

If you haven't bought that special someone in your life something for Valentine's day, via twitter here's a deal for you:

Losing sucks.

After a quick start going up 2-0 on the Pens, we did a Jets impression and gave up four unanswered goals. With each game lost, it's another two points that we didn't get, slowly killing whatever playoff hopes that the team had. According to Mirtle's playoff push, we'd have to go 19-8-0 to make it.

What is going on with our defence? Such a nightmare. Not even going to go into depth on this recap, we all saw this train wreck live. If you didn't, I'm saving you 3 hours of your life.

Record: Lightning (24-24-6) Penguins (31-19-5)
Previous games this season: January 15: Pens win 6-3, November 17: Lightning win 4-1
Game time: 7:00pm EDT on SUN (HD)

Both teams played yesterday and are playing the second half of their back to back tonight in Pittsburgh; The Pens had a day game against the Jets where it was the Evgeni Malkin show yet again with the Penguins won their game 8-5. They let in 2 goals early to the Jets but them came back in the 1st period to erase their mistake. John from Raw Charge muses that scoring 8 goals when you have to play the next day may be overdoing it, though I'm not sure if there is ever such a thing as overdoing it in goals.

The Lightning won 2-1 over the Sabres last night in a defensively well-played game for the team. They scored both their goals in the 2nd period, one from Downie and the other was Stamkos' 37th of the season.

Technically every point we get it keeps our playoff dreams alive, but time is running out man. One of the few things we have going for us is how the Southeast Division seems to field a group of teams below every other division in the NHL. That being said, NHL players are battlers and until its over, it's not over. Two more points tonight keeps the playoff dream still alive.

Scratched from last night, Adam Hall is expected to play tonight though Ryan Malone is not expected to make his return from injury tonight.

If you haven't heard, today the NHL made a formal announcement that 2013 Winter Classic will be the Detroit Red Wings vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs. The main event is supposed to have over 115,000 tickets available which to Bettman's ears makes a noise of ca-ching 115,000 times.

Via a statement emailed to The Detroit News:

"It will be a fantastic event with two great organizations at a storied venue," Yzerman said of the Jan. 1 game. "The perfect location and matchup, this is wonderful for the NHL.

"At this time I don't plan on participating in the alumni game but hope to watch the (Winter) Classic on TV."

Earlier today Wings GM had expressed hope that Yzerman would play in the alumni game for the Wings when they play against the Leafs in next years' Winter Classic. No reason why Yzerman wouldn't play was given, perhaps it is his health (his knee) which the Detroit News alluded to, or perhaps it's just because he is now the GM of another team. no comments

Tonight was definitely a better effort from the team. Although we got a point going into OT, the loss is just one more point that we didn't get. With only a limited number of games left before the trade deadline, every point matters, the OT loss matters.

Stamkos continues his league lead in goals scoring his 36th on a breakaway late in the 1st. Garon played well early stopping 10 shots in the 1st period and kept the team in the game since the Lightning only had 4 shots on net.

The second period was more even in terms of shots with the Lightning having 10 and the Rangers 11. A terrible hooking call on Ryan Shannon puts the Rangers up on the PP at 4:22 and the Rangers tied up the game 11 seconds later.
